Application

GB-562S non-regenerative adsorbent is used as a guard bed in the natural gas market to remove mercury impurities from process streams that are hydrogen sulfide free. Mercury from the stream is tightly bound to the adsorbent as it flows through the bed.

Depending on the plant configuration (in the figure below), UOP suggests placement of the Mercury Removal Unit (MRU) just after

the feed gas separator to fully protect all plant equipment (Option #1). If this is not an option, the MRU should be placed just after the dryer or the dryer regenerative stream (Option #2A or 2B) depending on the type of molecular sieve being used.

The placement of the MRU is critical to reduce the frequency of handling mercury-contaminated process equipment during plant turnaround. Most government agencies classify any equipment exposed to mercury as hazardous waste that needs to be dis- posed of properly by local regulations. Contact your local regulato- ry agency to determine the best solution for waste disposal.

Safe loading and unloading of the adsorbent from your equipment is imperative to ensure you realize the full potential of GB-562S adsorbent. For proper safety and handling, please contact your UOP representative.
