Tetrahydrofuran

Tetrahydrofuran, abbreviated THF, is a heterocyclic organic compound. Belongs to the ether class, is the aromatic compound furan complete hydrogenation product.

Tetrahydrofuran is one of the strongest polar ethers. It is used as a medium polar solvent in chemical reactions and extraction. It is a colorless volatile liquid at room temperature and has a smell similar to ether. Soluble in water, ethanol, ether, acetone, Chemicalbook benzene and other most organic solvents, known as "universal solvent". Main applications:

1. Raw materials of spandex synthesis reaction:

Tetrahydrofuran itself can be polycondensation (by cationic ring-opening repolymerization) into polytetramethylene ether diol (PTMEG), also known as tetrahydrofuran homopolyl. PTMEG and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) made of wear resistance, oil resistance, low temperature performance, high strength of special rubber; Block polyether polyester elastic material was prepared with dimethyl terephthalate and 1, 4-butanediol. PTMEG with relative molecular weight of 2000 and p-methylene bis (4-phenyl) diisocyanate (MDI) to make polyurethane elastic fiber (SPANDEX fiber), special rubber and some special purpose coating raw materials. The most important use of THF is for the production of PTMEG. According to rough statistics, about 80% of the global THF is used for the production of PTMEG, and PTMEG is mainly used for the production of spandex fiber.

2. Solvent with excellent performance:

Tetrahydrofuran is a commonly used excellent solvent, especially suitable for dissolving PVC, polyvinylidene chloride and butyl aniline, widely used as surface coating, anticorrosive coating, printing ink, tape and film coating solvent, with Chemicalbook in electroplating aluminum liquid can be arbitrary control of aluminum layer thickness and bright. For the production of tetrahydrothiophene, 1.4- dichloroethane, 2.3- dichlorotetrahydrofuran, valerolactone, butyl lactone and pyrrolidone. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used in the synthesis of coughbixin, rifumycin, progesterone and some hormone drugs. Tetrahydrothiophenol is produced by hydrogen sulfide treatment, which can be used as odor agent in fuel gas (identification additive), and is also the main solvent in the pharmaceutical industry.

4. Other Uses:

Chromatographic solvent (gel permeation chromatography), used for natural gas flavor, acetylene extraction solvent, polymer material light stabilizer, etc. With the wide application of tetrahydrofuran, especially in recent years, the rapid growth of polyurethane industry, the demand for PTMEG in our country is increasing, and the demand for tetrahydrofuran also shows a rapid growth trend.

Danger: Tetrahydrofuran belongs to class 3.1 inflammable liquid with low flash point, extremely flammable, vapor can form explosive mixture with air, explosion limit is 1.5% ~ 12% (volume fraction), with irritation. Its highly combustible nature is also a safety hazard. The biggest safety concern with THFS is the slow formation of highly explosive organic peroxides when exposed to air. To reduce this risk, commercially available THFS are often supplemented with 2, 6-di-tert-butylp-cresol (BHT) to inhibit the production of organic peroxides. At the same time, THF should not be dried because organic peroxides will be concentrated in the distillation residue.

Operation precautions: closed operation, full ventilation. Operators must be specially trained and strictly abide by operating procedures. It is recommended that operators wear a filter type gas mask (half mask), safety protective glasses, anti-static clothes, and rubber oil-resistant gloves. Keep away from fire, heat source, no smoking in the workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment. Prevent steam from escaping into the workplace air. Avoid contact with oxidants, acids and bases. The flow rate should be controlled during filling, and there should be a grounding device to prevent electrostatic accumulation. When handling, light loading and unloading should be done to prevent damage to packaging and containers. Equipped with the corresponding variety and quantity of fire equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment. An empty container may contain harmful residue.

Storage precautions: Usually the commodity has an inhibitor. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat. The temperature of the warehouse should not exceed 30℃. The package should be sealed and not in contact with air. It should be stored separately from oxidizers, acids and bases, and should not be mixed. Explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities are adopted. Do not use mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to spark. The storage area should be equipped with leak emergency treatment equipment and suitable holding materials.
