Introduction: With the transformation and upgrading of the domestic fine chemical industry, traditional bulk chemical sodium metabisulfite is gaining new vitality. Since February 2026, several leading enterprises have increased their investment in the R&D and production capacity for pharmaceutical-grade and food-grade sodium metabisulfite. Industry analysis indicates that driven by diverse demands from downstream sectors such as pharmaceutical intermediates, high-end food preservatives, and water treatment, sodium metabisulfite is evolving from a common industrial raw material towards a high-value-added fine chemical, redefining its market potential.

From Industrial Grade to High-Purity Grade: Quality Upgrade in Progress
As an important inorganic chemical raw material, sodium metabisulfite, known for its strong reducing properties and functions like bleaching, preservation, and sterilization, has long been widely used in traditional industries such as mineral processing, printing and dyeing, and rubber. However, reporters learned from the recently held 2026 National Fine Chemical Industry Development Seminar that with continuous innovation in domestic production processes, the application proportion of high-purity sodium metabisulfite in fields like pharmaceutical synthesis and high-end food additives is significantly increasing.

However, reporters learned from the recently held 2026 National Fine Chemical Industry Development Seminar that with continuous innovation in domestic production processes, the application proportion of high-purity sodium metabisulfite in fields like pharmaceutical synthesis and high-end food additives is significantly increasing.
Steady Demand in the Food Sector, Safety Standards Drive Upgrades
In the food industry, sodium metabisulfite, as a food additive permitted by GB2760, is mainly used as a bleaching agent, preservative, and leavening agent. Although public discussion about food additives persists, the strengthening of national supervision over food safety has on the contrarypromoted the industry’s development towards standardization and higher quality. To meet increasingly stringent export and domestic sales standards, legitimate food production enterprises show a stronger willingness to purchase sodium metabisulfite that complies with national pharmacopoeia standards.
“In the past, many small and medium-sized manufacturers only sought low prices, but now brand-name food companies pay more attention to the supplier’s qualifications and product stability,” said a technical manager from a major sodium metabisulfite production enterprise in Hunan during an interview. He mentioned that the company has recently seen a significant increase in orders for food-grade products and is considering converting one of its industrial-grade production lines into a dedicated food-grade line to meet downstream customers’ high demands for batch consistency.
Water Treatment and New Energy: Emerging Growth Poles Emerge
Beyond traditional pharmaceutical and food sectors, the application potential of sodium metabisulfite in the environmental protection field is also being explored. As a water treatment agent, it effectively removes residual chlorine from wastewater and has rigid demand in industrial circulating water and drinking water treatment. Furthermore, in the rapidly growing new energy battery recycling industry, sodium metabisulfite is being explored as a reducing leaching agent for certain specific metal elements. Although this application is still in the transition phase from laboratory to pilot scale, its demonstrated chemical activity opens up new possibilities for the industry.
Supported by the continuous expansion of application fields, the market price of sodium metabisulfite has also gained strong support. Data from (Business Society) shows that on February 27, the quoted price for industrial-grade sodium metabisulfite in the Hunan market rose to 2400 RMB/ton, a single-day increase of 100 RMB/ton. As of February 27, the benchmark price for sodium metabisulfite from Business Society stood at 2306.67 RMB/ton, a high point for the past year.
Future Outlook: Refinement and Differentiation are Key to Breakthroughs
Facing the still fierce competition of homogenization, industry experts point out that to escape simple price wars, sodium metabisulfite producers must extend downstream and pursue a path of refinement and differentiation. Companies capable of stably supplying products with low heavy metal content and high purity, tailored for specific applications, will gain a competitive edge in high-end tracks like pharmaceuticals and food. Simultaneously, with the advancement of the national “Dual Carbon” strategy, energy-saving and consumption-reducing transformations in the sodium metabisulfite production process, along with the resource utilization of by-products, will also become crucial components of a company’s core competitiveness.
